For who?
- Emerging artists: recent university graduates, aspiring and emerging professional practitioners from across the country;
- Career development for mature artists, including immigrant artists, from across the country.
What we do
We offer an experience of working in a professional setting, training in practices that are not generally covered in traditional training programs or within the education system.
Creation:
- Developing work through improvisation;
- Developing a creative idea into a fully-fledged work of art;
- Integrating different disciplines in creation;
- Creating work which is inclusive and intercultural;
- Collaboration across disciplines and cultural differences;
- Culminating in hybrid forms that reflect the contemporary experience.
Alternative performance practice:
- Intensive body work – the body as instrument;
- Exploring forms of expression from different cultural orientations;
- Exploring cultural intersections;
- Establishing a dialogue between specialists from different artistic disciplines;
- Learning to communicate across disciplines;
- Exploring different styles of practice.
How?
Workshops
A group of eight to 12 interns gathers for an intensive workshop led by professional practitioners. Each workshop has a theme or topic of exploration chosen by the workshop leader, which informs the leader’s own practice.
Why?
- To expand the vocabulary of arts practitioners to include alternative performance practice techniques;
- To build a community of arts practitioners who have the tools needed for alternative performance practice and creation;
- To build a community of arts practitioners who reflect the diverse cultural orientations of the larger community;
- To build a culture of intercultural creation in alternative performance practice;
- To give recent graduates, aspiring professionals and mature artists a reason to choose to live in the region.
Workshop leaders
The internship program also offers creative benefits to the facilitator-practitioners, who can be brought in from across the country:
- To develop their own ideas by giving them an opportunity to explore a topic or area of interest;
- An internship workshop can serve as a development workshop on a new work, propelling that work further towards realization;
- The opportunity to train artists with the skills needed to become members of the company.
